Trauma Focused Therapy

When a person experiences a severely distressing or life-threatening event, the extreme anxiety they feel often does not end with the conclusion of the event. It is common for many people to suffer from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) after a traumatic event occurs. These feelings of extreme stress, helplessness, and loss of emotional control are tied to the upsetting emotions, memories, and anxiety of the event that just won’t go away.

How and Why Does This Happen?

There are various forms of trauma, such as a “one-time event” like being involved in an accident, an injury, a natural disaster, being the victim of a violent attack, a sexual abuse, or witnessing a violent attack. There is also a form of ongoing trauma, which can result from living in a crime-ridden area, repeated abuse, violence, or battling a life-threatening illness. There are many commonly overlooked events that can cause trauma to a person’s psychological health, including surgery, a sudden death of a loved one, the end of a significant relationship, or a humiliating or deeply disappointing experience. Any event can lead to trauma if it happened unexpectedly, repeatedly, you felt unprepared for it, you felt powerless to prevent it, or it happened during your childhood.

Everyone reacts differently to trauma through a wide-range of physical and emotional responses.

The most common emotional and physical reactions are:

•Shock and disbelief

•Difficulty concentrating

•Anger, irritability, mood swings

•Withdrawing from close friends and relatives
